Container Volume Calculator — Volume of Pots, Planters & Grow Bags
Estimate the volume of a container from its dimensions. Choose the closest geometric approximation (cylinder for round pots, box for rectangular planters, frustum for tapered pots/grow bags). Results are in gallons, liters, and cubic feet.
What this calculator determines
It estimates the volume of a container from its dimensions using a cylinder, box, or frustum (tapered) geometric approximation.

Examples
Tapered pot, 14 in top / 10 in bottom, 10 in tall
Frustum, top 14 in, bottom 10 in, height 10 in
Calculation
- Top area: π × 7² = 154
- Bottom area: π × 5² = 78.5
- Volume: (10/3) × (154 + 78.5 + √(154×78.5)) = 1,150 cu in
- Gallons: ~4.94 gal
~4.94 gal (18.7 L)
Assumptions & Conventions
- Geometric approximation
- Choose the closest solid: cylinder for straight-sided round pots, box for rectangular planters, frustum for tapered pots and grow bags. Real containers rarely match exactly.
- Full capacity
- The result is the full geometric capacity at the entered height, not the amount you would actually fill.
- Unit conversions
- 1 cubic inch = 0.004329 gallons; 1 gallon = 3.785 liters.
