Chicken Per Person Calculator — How Much Chicken to Buy
Enter your headcount, pick a chicken cut (breast, thigh, drumstick, or whole), enter cooked ounces per person, and add a leftovers buffer. The calculator totals the cooked chicken needed and divides by the typical yield for that cut and bone status to find the raw chicken to buy. Different cuts and bone-in vs boneless have different yields — both are adjustable planning estimates.
What this calculator determines
It estimates the raw chicken to buy for a crowd by totaling cooked ounces needed and dividing by the adjustable yield for the cut and bone status you choose.

Examples
10 people, boneless breast, 6 oz
10 people, 6 oz cooked each, boneless breast (75% yield)
Calculation
- Cooked = 10 × 6 = 60 oz = 3.75 lb
- Raw = 3.75 ÷ 0.75 = 5 lb
≈ 5 lb raw boneless breast
Assumptions & Conventions
- Yield is a variable planning estimate
- The default yield per cut and bone status is a typical estimate; actual yield varies with cut, bone, skin, cooking method, and doneness, and is user-adjustable.
- Servings per person is a default you can change
- The calculator starts with a default of 6 oz cooked per person, which you can change; it is not a universal recommendation.
- No purchase rounding
- The raw chicken amount is calculated to two decimals, not rounded to a whole-pound purchase size.
