Ice Requirement Calculator — Estimate Ice for Your Catch

~30 seconds

Estimate the amount of ice required for your catch based on an ice-to-fish ratio (pounds of ice per pound of fish). The presets are conservative FAO-grounded planning starting points for temperate and tropical conditions — not universal requirements. Actual ice needs depend on initial fish temperature, ambient and sea temperature, trip duration, insulation, heat infiltration, fish size and type, stowage method, icing efficiency, and expected ice loss. These results are planning estimates only — consult your buyer's requirements and industry best practices for your species and fishery.

What this calculator determines

It estimates ice required for catch by multiplying catch weight by a selected pounds-of-ice-per-pound-of-fish ratio.

Examples

Temperate trip, 0.5:1 ratio

12,000 lb catch; 0.5:1 temperate planning guide

Calculation

  1. 12,000 × 0.5 = 6,000 lb ice (estimate)

Estimated ice needed: 6,000 lb (estimate)

Tropical trip, 1:1 ratio

8,000 lb catch; 1:1 tropical / high-heat planning guide

Calculation

  1. 8,000 × 1.0 = 8,000 lb ice (estimate)

Estimated ice needed: 8,000 lb (estimate)

Assumptions & Conventions

FAO planning starting points
Preset ratios are conservative FAO-grounded planning starting points, not universal requirements: 0.5:1 (0.5 lb ice per lb fish) temperate planning guide; 1:1 (1 lb ice per lb fish) tropical / high-heat planning guide. FAO notes that substantially higher ice ratios may be used in some tropical or longer-trip operations, but trip duration and conditions are major influences and no single ratio fits all voyages.Source: FAO — fresh-fish handling and fishing-vessel icing guidance (use of ice and chilled seawater on fishing vessels).
Operation-specific needs
Actual ice requirements are operation-specific and depend on initial fish temperature, ambient/sea temperature, trip duration, insulation, heat infiltration, fish size/type, stowage method, icing efficiency, and expected ice loss. FAO guidance notes realistic ice requirements should ultimately be informed by actual vessel and fishery experience.Source: FAO — fresh-fish handling and fishing-vessel icing guidance (use of ice and chilled seawater on fishing vessels).
