Thread Estimation Calculator — How Much Thread for Quilting

Enter your quilt size, quilting method, and line spacing (for straight-line, cross-hatch, and pantograph) or thread density (for stippling). The calculator returns the geometric path length in yards and the number of spools to buy. Straight-line and cross-hatch give the geometric path length of the quilting lines; pantograph is a rough lower-bound estimate (the real path depends on the design); stippling uses a user-supplied density and is an estimate. Add ~10–15% for travel, starts/stops, and bobbin winding for a practical thread estimate.

Assumptions & Conventions

Geometric path
Straight-line and cross-hatch give the geometric path length of the quilting lines, not real-world consumption; add ~10–15% for travel and bobbin winding.
Stippling density
Stippling uses a user-supplied thread density (inches per square inch); no standard density exists, so it is an estimate.
Spool size
Spools needed are rounded up from total thread yards ÷ the spool size you enter (default 500 yd).
