Half-Square Triangle (HST) Calculator — Cut Sizes & Yardage

~30 seconds

Enter how many half-square triangles (HSTs) you need, the FINISHED size you want in the quilt, and your construction method. The calculator gives the starting square cut size, how many squares to cut of each fabric, the unfinished unit size, and the yardage to buy (rounded up to the next 1/8 yard).

What this calculator determines

It calculates the starting square cut size, square count, unfinished unit size, and per-fabric yardage for half-square triangles using traditional, 4-at-a-time, or 8-at-a-time methods.

Examples

20 HSTs, 3″ finished, Traditional

20 HSTs, 3″ finished, traditional, 42″ fabric

Calculation

  1. Starting square: 3 + ⅞ = 3.875″
  2. Squares per fabric: ceil(20 ÷ 2) = 10
  3. Unfinished: 3 + ½ = 3.5″
  4. Across 42″: floor(42 ÷ 3.875) = 10; rows = ceil(10 ÷ 10) = 1
  5. Linear: 1 × 3.875 = 3.875″ → 0.108 yd → buy 0.125 yd per fabric

Cut 10 squares of 3.875″ per fabric — buy 0.125 yd each

20 HSTs, 3″ finished, 4-at-a-time

20 HSTs, 3″ finished, 4-at-a-time, 42″ fabric

Calculation

  1. Starting square: (3 + 0.5) × √2 = 3.5 × 1.414 = 4.95″ → cut 5″
  2. Squares per fabric: ceil(20 ÷ 4) = 5
  3. Unfinished: 3.5″ (bias edges — handle gently)
  4. Across 42″: floor(42 ÷ 5) = 8; rows = ceil(5 ÷ 8) = 1
  5. Linear: 1 × 5 = 5″ → 0.139 yd → buy 0.25 yd per fabric

Cut 5 squares of 5″ per fabric — buy 0.25 yd each (bias edges)

20 HSTs, 3″ finished, 8-at-a-time

20 HSTs, 3″ finished, 8-at-a-time, 42″ fabric

Calculation

  1. Starting square: 2 × (3 + ⅞) = 2 × 3.875 = 7.75″
  2. Squares per fabric: ceil(20 ÷ 8) = 3
  3. Unfinished: 3.5″
  4. Across 42″: floor(42 ÷ 7.75) = 5; rows = ceil(3 ÷ 5) = 1
  5. Linear: 1 × 7.75 = 7.75″ → 0.215 yd → buy 0.25 yd per fabric

Cut 3 squares of 7.75″ per fabric — buy 0.25 yd each

Assumptions & Conventions

Seam allowance
Formulas assume a ¼″ seam allowance; the ⅞″ and 1¼″ additions include the diagonal seam allowances.
Cut rounding
The starting square is rounded up to the next 1/8″ and yardage up to the next 1/8 yard.
Per-fabric yardage
The yardage shown is per fabric — you need this much of each of the two fabrics.
