Examples
50×65, 6″ blocks, no sashing/borders
50″ × 65″ target, 6″ blocks, no sashing, no borders
Calculation
- Across: floor(50 ÷ 6) = 8
- Down: floor(65 ÷ 6) = 10
- Total: 8 × 10 = 80 blocks
- Actual: 48″ × 60″

With sashing and borders
50″ × 65″ target, 6″ blocks, 2″ sashing, 3″ border
Calculation
- Across: floor((50 − 3) ÷ (6 + 2)) = floor(47 ÷ 8) = 5
- Down: floor((65 − 3) ÷ 8) = floor(62 ÷ 8) = 7
- Total: 5 × 7 = 35 blocks
- Actual width: 5×6 + 4×2 + 2×3 = 46″
- Actual length: 7×6 + 6×2 + 2×3 = 60″

Assumptions & Conventions
- Finished sizes
- Block, sashing, and border widths are finished (sewn-in) dimensions; seam allowances are not added.
- Block count rounding
- Blocks fit in whole numbers using floor, so the actual finished size may be smaller than your target.
- Sashing between blocks
- Sashing strips run between blocks only (not on the outer edges); add one more strip per direction if you want sashing on the edges too.
