Examples
8×10 blocks, 6″, 0.5″ sashing
8 across × 10 down, 6″ blocks, 0.5″ sashing, 42″ fabric, 0.25″ seam
Calculation
- Vertical strips: 8 − 1 = 7, length = 10×6 + 9×0.5 + 0.5 = 65″
- Horizontal strips: 10 − 1 = 9, length = 8×6 + 7×0.5 + 0.5 = 52″
- Total: 7×65 + 9×52 = 923″
- Cut width: 0.5 + 0.5 = 1″
- WOF strips: ceil(923 ÷ 41.5) = 23
- Fabric: 23 × 1 = 23″ → 0.639 yd → buy 0.75 yd
7 vertical + 9 horizontal strips — buy 0.75 yards
Assumptions & Conventions
- Sashing between blocks
- Sashing is counted as continuous strips running between blocks only (not on the outer edges).
- Finished widths
- Block and sashing widths are finished (sewn-in) dimensions; seam allowance is added separately for cutting.
- Purchase rounding
- Purchase yardage is rounded up to the next 1/8 yard.
