Setting Triangle Calculator — On-Point Side & Corner Triangles
For a quilt with blocks set on point, enter how many blocks are across and down and the finished block size, then choose SIDE or CORNER triangles. The calculator gives the square to cut, how to cut it (one or both diagonals), how many triangles you need, the grain orientation, and the yardage to buy.
What this calculator determines
It calculates the cut square size, triangle count, grain orientation, and yardage for side or corner setting triangles in an on-point quilt.

Examples
5×5 on-point, 6″ blocks, Side triangles
5 across × 5 down, 6″ blocks, side triangles, 42″ fabric
Calculation
- Cut square: (6 × √2) + 1.25 = 8.485 + 1.25 = 9.735″ → cut 9.75″
- Cut on BOTH diagonals → 4 side triangles per square
- Side count: 2×(5−1) + 2×(5−1) = 16; squares = ceil(16 ÷ 4) = 4
- Grain: straight of grain on the long outer edge
- Across 42″: floor(42 ÷ 9.75) = 4; rows = ceil(4 ÷ 4) = 1; 1 × 9.75 = 9.75″ → 0.271 yd → buy 0.375 yd
Cut 4 squares of 9.75″ (both diagonals) — 16 side triangles — buy 0.375 yd
5×5 on-point, 6″ blocks, Corner triangles
5 across × 5 down, 6″ blocks, corner triangles, 42″ fabric
Calculation
- Cut square: (6 ÷ √2) + 0.875 = 4.243 + 0.875 = 5.118″ → cut 5.125″
- Cut on ONE diagonal → 2 corner triangles per square
- Corner count: 4; squares = ceil(4 ÷ 2) = 2
- Grain: straight of grain on the two outer legs
- Across 42″: floor(42 ÷ 5.125) = 8; rows = ceil(2 ÷ 8) = 1; 1 × 5.125 = 5.125″ → 0.142 yd → buy 0.25 yd
Cut 2 squares of 5.125″ (one diagonal) — 4 corner triangles — buy 0.25 yd
4×6 on-point, 8″ blocks, Side triangles
4 across × 6 down, 8″ blocks, side triangles, 42″ fabric
Calculation
- Cut square: (8 × √2) + 1.25 = 11.314 + 1.25 = 12.564″ → cut 12.625″
- Side count: 2×(4−1) + 2×(6−1) = 6 + 10 = 16; squares = ceil(16 ÷ 4) = 4
- Across 42″: floor(42 ÷ 12.625) = 3; rows = ceil(4 ÷ 3) = 2; 2 × 12.625 = 25.25″ → 0.701 yd → buy 0.75 yd
Cut 4 squares of 12.625″ (both diagonals) — 16 side triangles — buy 0.75 yd
Assumptions & Conventions
- Grain orientation
- Side triangles are cut on both diagonals (straight grain on the long outer edge); corner triangles on one diagonal (straight grain on the two outer legs).
- Seam allowance
- The +1¼″ (side) and +⅞″ (corner) additions cover the diagonal seam allowances at a ¼″ seam.
- Cut rounding
- The cut square is rounded up to the next 1/8″ and yardage up to the next 1/8 yard.
