Seam Allowance Adjustment Calculator — Cut Size for Any Seam
Scope: this tool applies ONLY to simple straight-edged dimensions where one seam allowance is consumed on each of two opposite edges — squares, rectangles, and the legs of a right-triangle piece. It does NOT replace the diagonal-unit cutting formulas: use the dedicated HST, QST, Flying Geese, and Setting Triangle calculators for those units — they remain authoritative. Enter the finished piece size, the standard seam allowance (default ¼″), and your desired seam allowance. The calculator returns the cut size for each seam allowance, the difference in cut size, and the impact on the finished block size. The universal relationship is cut size = finished size + 2 × seam allowance (one seam consumed on each side).

Calculation
- Cut (standard): 6 + 2×0.25 = 6.5″
- Cut (desired): 6 + 2×0.25 = 6.5″
- Difference: 0″
Cut 6.5″ squares — no difference
6″ finished square, ⅜″ seam → 6.75″ cut
Square, 6″ finished, standard 0.25″, desired 0.375″
Calculation
- Cut (standard): 6 + 2×0.25 = 6.5″
- Cut (desired): 6 + 2×0.375 = 6.75″

Assumptions & Conventions
- Standard seam
- The standard quilting seam allowance is ¼″ (default); the desired seam can be set to any value.
